Does saving the Republic have you feeling overwhelmed?
That’s where I’ve been since the inauguration. It’s felt like a hurricane of constitutional violations, nepotism and two-faced lies since then. Countless times, I’ve tried to sit in front of my computer and translate that mess inside my head into something coherent and powerful. Every time, I was just taken over by the anger and sense of powerlessness that I had to lie down.
But I’m glad I’ve taken these weeks to pause before writing. It’s allowed me to assess the assault of nonsense, start to pick up the patterns and determine where our energy would be best put to use.
I want to start off by sharing some advice that is being attributed to Bernice King, the daughter of Martin Luther King, Jr. She may not be the original author but regardless, it’s worth reading:
The sage advice above has helped me find a path forward. At ADNY, we’re going to:
- Focus less on the person and more on the issues
- Hold the Republican party accountable for the issues to put pressure on them to act
- Stop giving Trump the attention he’s craving
- Not argue with people who support him
With that in mind, I can finally share with all of you some great ways to make a difference RIGHT NOW!
Call Your Local Representative
5 Calls provides the phone numbers of your local representatives and scripts for all the major issues being debated right now. Calling makes more a difference that Facebook posts or Twitter retweets because right now, they are the only form of communication that our representatives are regularly asking for stats on. Emails can and will be deleted. Not enough of our reps are millennials all up on social media.
I hate phone calls, and I’ll admit, I haven’t done this yet. But I plan to! If you need baby steps, try email first as a warm up. You can get your local rep’s email address here.
Become a Leader
Especially for all you women out there who think you can’t or it’s too hard, think of all the men less qualified than you who are already doing it! They don’t let the fear of not being good enough hold them back and neither should you.
Here are some websites with training programs work checking out:
Find Republicans That We Can Work With
This is going to be a project, but I’d like to slowly start building profiles on the pros and cons of various Republicans to see who we can work with so we can potentially build a coalition to minimize Trump’s damage. It may be a long shot, but it’s worth a try. Senators Lindsey Graham and John McCain may be good starts, but we need more. Because votes matter, not just during elections but on the floor of Congress.
So roll up your sleeves, we’ve got work to do!
